Shastri is a graduate of the University of the West Indies and the Universities of Winnipeg and Manitoba. Speaking of his work, US art curator, Dr. Samella Lewis says, "the enchanting visual narratives of Shastri Maharaj are reminiscent of the magic scrolls found in early Ethiopian paintings and Buddhist cave paintings in India."

Shastri lives, paints and teaches in central Trinidad and he regularly exhibits both locally and abroad.
