The diary provides an account of the daily life of Corporal James McBride Robbins, a British soldier serving in Jamaica. It describes his journey by ship from Plymouth to Jamaica, his interactions with local Jamaicans, health conditions including unusual cures and treatments, superstitions and social activities.

Biographical / Historical

James McBride Robbins was born on 9 January 1874. He joined the British army in 1890 and sailed for Jamaica at the age of 21 where he was stationed as a member of the Royal Engineers until 1898.
