Carlisle Chang collection
Scope and Contents
The collection includes sketches of carnival costumes, numerous other sketch pads, photographs, slides, correspondence, newspaper clippings, documents relating to Carifesta V, transparencies, catalogues of art exhibitions and the medal of the Bienal de Sao Paulo, Brazil which Chang received.

Biographical / Historical
Carlisle Chang was born in San Juan, Trinidad, Trinidad and Tobago, in 1921. His father was a migrant from China and his mother, who was also of Chinese descent, was from British Guiana. Throughout a 60-year career in art, Chang was a mural and easel painter as well as a designer for carnival, theatre and ballet. As a designer of carnival costumes, Chang won the designers Prize several times. Some of his designs have been depicted on national postage stamps. The 1997 CLICO calendar which became a collector's item, was one of his last major works. He died on May 6, 2001.

Immediate Source of Acquisition
Bequeathed to the Main Library, The University of the West Indies, St. Augustine by Mr. Carlisle Chang. The Collection was received in 2004.
Award
The Carlisle Chang collection was named to the Trinidad and Tobago Memory of the World Register in 2010.
