Biographical / Historical

The People’s Revolutionary Government (PRG) assumed power in Grenada in 1979 following a coup d'état by Maurice Bishop and the New Jewel Movement, which overthrew the administration of Eric Gairy. Guided by a Marxist-Leninist ideology, the PRG sought to dismantle dependency and imperialism while implementing state-led socioeconomic reforms to secure national autonomy. However, a violent internal power struggle ensued, resulting in Bishop's house arrest and subsequent execution in 1983. This political crisis prompted a United States-led military intervention in 1983.
