Scope and Contents

The fonds consist of bound volumes related to land transactions in Trinidad and Tobago. The fonds includes Caroni Deeds (1965 - 1996), Texaco Deeds (1964 - 1996), Texaco Titles (1958 - 1987), Notes of Title (1843 - 1964), Deeds (1956 - 1975), Titles (1958 - 1986), Supreme Court Proceedings – Probate (1896 - 1934) and Probate Proceedings (1944 - 1969). Probate documents-

The documents included in the bound volumes are used to apply for the Probate and Letters of Administration Grants to deal with property/estates owned previously by various people upon their death. There are copies of wills, various certificates, and lists of the various assets and correspondence. Included as well are documents that assist in grasping a full account of items that comprise their estates.

Titles-

The documents include reports on the ownership and the history of the transfers for various parcels of land. Included are correspondence with enclosures from the financial institutions giving instructions for the preparation of the Deeds and other instruments of title together with requisitions on title (eg. Land and building Tax receipts and Certificates of Assessment).

Deeds-

Contains Mortgages charged on Vehicles and parcels of Lands. There are also Deeds of release, Deeds of Conveyance and Leases with annexed cadastral sheets, Memorandum of Transfer, Deeds of Mortgage, Lease Agreements and Debentures.

Notes of title-

Comprise abstracts of the transactions that have occurred on various parcels of land and the documents of title that evidence these transactions. Also includes Statutory Declarations giving background information on some of the transactions and cadastral sheets outlining the respective properties.There are also some Certificates including Death and Marriage Certificates for the owners of the properties.

Texaco Deeds-

The vast majority of the documents cover reduced rate loan facility given to Texaco employees during their employment at Texaco. There are on occasion some documents included, which cover Leases for the rental of a property owned by Texaco.

Administrative History:

J. D. Sellier and Co. was founded by Jean-Baptiste Denis Sellier who was admitted to practice as a Solicitor and Conveyancer on the island of Trinidad in 1882 which makes the company one of the oldest Law Firms in Trinidad and Tobago that is still in existence. Sellier continued to practice law on his own until he invited his colleague and friend, George Cecil Pantin, into a partnership in 1916. At present, J.D. Sellier and Co. has expanded to 20 attorneys-at-law with several practice areas including, Real Estate, Corporate and Commercial, Intellectual Property, and Litigation. The company also carries legal expertise in the areas of Intellectual Property Law, Mergers and Acquisitions, Admiralty and Shipping Law, Tax Law, Banking and Finance, and Energy and Regulated Industries.
