Scope and Contents

On July 27th 1990, the Jamaat-al-Muslimeen led by Yasim Abu Bakr staged a coup to overthrow the government of Trinidad and Tobago. The collection consists of legal documentation related to this attempted coup. The documents cover several subjects: merchants' insurance compensation claims; newspaper clippings; affidavits; transcripts of radio and TV broadcasts; notes of evidence, enquiry and charges; record of proceedings in the Privy Council against members of the Jamaat-al Muslimeen. Among other things, the collection gives information on the persons who lost their businesses in the looting and destruction which followed in the wake of the attempted coup.
